The town centre has changed completely

For years Stockport was somewhere people got married on the way to somewhere else. That is no longer true. The old warehouses and mills around the town centre have been turned into some of the more characterful wedding spaces in the county, and they now pull couples in from across south Manchester and Cheshire.

They also share the problem every converted industrial building has: brick, timber, glass and stone, with nothing in the room to absorb sound. A system that would be perfectly judged in a carpeted hotel suite turns into a wall of noise in a space like that, because every surface sends it back a fraction late.

How I set up in those rooms

More speakers, lower volume, aimed shorter. The aim is to keep the energy concentrated on the dancefloor rather than letting it travel the length of the building and return as an echo. Guests at the bar should be able to have a conversation while the floor is still going properly — in a hard room that only happens if somebody planned for it.

The suburbs are a different job

Bramhall, Cheadle, Marple, Romiley and Hazel Grove are largely hotels, golf clubs and function rooms. Softer acoustically, easier for access and parking, and considerably more likely to have a sound limiter fitted, because there are houses nearby and the venue has learned the hard way.

Limiters are fine when you know about them. What does not work is arriving with a rig built to be impressive and spending the night resetting a trip.
