Close to the city, run like a suburb

Sale is fifteen minutes from Manchester on the tram and feels nothing like it. That combination is exactly why couples choose it: guests staying in town can get out easily, and the venues themselves are leafier, quieter and generally more relaxed than a city centre room.

The trade-off is the curfew. Almost every good venue in Trafford has houses nearby, and licences here are tighter than in central Manchester. Midnight is standard and some finish earlier, which is fine as long as everybody knows in advance and the night is built to peak at the right time rather than an hour after the music stops.

The venue types

Golf clubs, hotels, cricket clubs and a number of handsome older buildings converted for events. Acoustically these are mostly easy rooms — carpet, conventional ceilings, soft furnishing — so the technical job is straightforward and the attention goes on the crowd instead.

Sound limiters are common. Not universal, but common enough that I ask every time.

Pacing a shorter night

A midnight finish with a seven o’clock start gives you five hours, and there is a real skill in not spending the first two of them being polite. If the room is ready at half eight, I would rather go then and hold it than save everything for a peak that never arrives because the lights come up.

Where the venue allows a later finish, the shape changes entirely. Either way, knowing the licence is the first thing.
