A borough of two very different weddings

Rochdale town centre and the moorland edge above it are barely twenty minutes apart and they produce completely different evenings.

In town, the wedding spaces tend to be large and formal — high ceilings, hard floors, a lot of volume in the architectural sense. Those rooms look extraordinary in photographs and they are unforgiving acoustically. Sound disappears upwards, and a system set up for a modest function room leaves the back half of a grand hall hearing an echo rather than a beat.

Out towards Littleborough, Norden, Milnrow and Hollingworth Lake, the venues get smaller, warmer and considerably harder to reach. Narrow lanes, tight parking, and in a couple of cases a load-in that involves a gravel path. Beautiful settings, and every one of them wants planning rather than improvisation.

What I do about the big rooms

Height is the enemy. In a tall hall the trick is keeping the energy down on the dancefloor instead of letting it wash around the ceiling, which means more speakers placed lower and aimed shorter rather than one pair turned up.

Uplighting earns its money in these rooms too. A large formal space lit only by its own chandeliers reads cold on camera at nine o’clock; the same room with colour up the walls looks like somewhere you’d want to be.

The Pennine venues

Anything east of the town towards Littleborough gets weather as a planning factor. Marquees and outbuildings on that side of the borough need power checked in advance and a backup plan for damp, because the difference between a good evening and a bad one out there can genuinely be an extension lead.
