Smaller rooms, closer crowds

Mossley sits up the Tame valley between Stalybridge and Saddleworth, and it is one of the few places I cover where the typical wedding is genuinely small. Sixty to a hundred guests, often mostly local, frequently in a village hall or a room attached to a pub rather than a purpose-built venue.

That is a better night than it sounds, and it is a different craft. In a room of sixty, everybody can see everybody. There is no back of the room to hide in and no anonymous middle. If four people get up, it registers. If the floor empties, everybody notices.

Less kit, not more

The most common mistake in a small room is too much equipment. A pair of speakers built for two hundred, run at a quarter, sounds worse than a modest system running properly — and it takes up floor space you cannot spare when the room is already tight.

So for Mossley I generally bring less. Smaller rig, lighting scaled to the ceiling height, and everything positioned so the dancefloor is the biggest thing in the room rather than the DJ being it.

The practical side of a hall

Village halls come with a set of constraints you learn quickly: one ring main shared with the caterers, a hatch instead of a door, a car park that fits fifteen cars, and a hard finish time because the booking says so. I ask about all four before the day.

Weather is a factor up here

Anything involving an outdoor element in the upper valley needs a wet plan. It is high, it is exposed, and a marquee up there in October is a different proposition from the same marquee in Sale.
