The city is the reason this page exists

For years my website said “Manchester based DJ” and then did almost nothing to back it up. That was a fair description of where I am and a poor description of where I was findable. This page, and the ones around it, are me fixing that.

I’m twenty-five minutes from the city centre and I’ve been playing weddings in it for many years. What follows is what actually differs about doing one here.

Rooms that fight back

Central Manchester has some of the best wedding spaces in the north, and a lot of them are converted industrial buildings. Brick, glass, steel, concrete floors, ceilings at twenty feet. They photograph beautifully and they are acoustically hostile.

A rig that sounds tight in a hotel suite will smear in a mill conversion, because there is nothing soft in the room to absorb anything. The answer is more sources at lower volume, placed to keep the energy on the dancefloor rather than bouncing off the far wall two beats late. Get it wrong and the room sounds loud and muddy at the same time — which is the specific complaint I hear most often about other people’s setups in these venues.

Hotel ballrooms are the opposite problem: comfortable acoustics, but often a limiter and a house AV system somebody will want you to use. I’ve played both sides of that at rooms like The Midland and the Manchester Deansgate Hotel — different problem each time, same fix: know the room before the guests arrive.

Logistics are half the job

Loading bays with timed access. Service lifts shared with a working hotel. Streets you cannot park a van on between certain hours. A city centre wedding needs its access sorted weeks out, with the venue’s events team, in writing.

I do that as a matter of course. It is unglamorous and it is the difference between setting up calmly at four o’clock and carrying speakers three hundred metres from a multi-storey.

Late licences change the shape of the night

Most suburban venues stop at midnight. Plenty of central ones run to one or two. An extra two hours is not simply more of the same — it means the build has to be slower, the peak has to land later, and there needs to be somewhere left to go at half twelve.
