Bury weddings tend to head uphill

The borough covers a market town, some comfortable suburbs and then a long climb north into genuine countryside. A large share of Bury couples end up somewhere around Ramsbottom, Holcombe or Tottington, and that shapes everything about the evening.

Rural venues north of the town are frequently converted agricultural buildings. Stone walls, timber roofs, flagged or concrete floors, and almost nothing soft anywhere in the room. Acoustically that is a long reverb and a lot of harshness at volume, which is why so many barn weddings end up sounding shouty. The fix is not more power. It is a smaller, better-placed system and a bit of restraint.

Power, curfews and neighbours

Three things catch people out up there, and all three are solvable if raised early.

Power first: several outbuildings run off a supply designed for a farm, not for catering plus lighting plus a PA. I ask about it before I plan the rig.

Then curfews. A venue with houses or a farm nearby often has a planning condition on amplified music, sometimes as early as half eleven. Worth knowing before you plan a last hour you’re not allowed to have.

Then getting out. A dark single-track lane with forty cars and a taxi firm that doesn’t want to come up it is a genuine end-of-night problem, and it’s your venue’s coordinator who can solve it, not me — but somebody should ask.

Closer in

Around Bury itself, Whitefield and Prestwich, it’s a more conventional mix of hotel suites and function rooms. Easier access, more likely to have a sound limiter, and generally a later licence than the rural venues.

Getting a date held
