Big rooms and big guest lists

The thing that consistently distinguishes a Bolton wedding from one in, say, Didsbury is size. Guest lists run larger, more of the extended family comes, and the venues have grown to match — the borough has a good number of banqueting suites that seat two hundred and fifty or more without feeling empty.

A room that deep changes the technical job entirely. The back tables are a long way from the front, and the temptation is to solve it by turning up, which just means the first two tables spend the night shouting at each other. The right answer is more coverage: additional speakers further down the room at lower level, so the volume is even from front to back.

A crowd that will dance if you let them

Bolton crowds are, in my experience, among the easiest in Greater Manchester to get on a floor and among the hardest to keep there if you misjudge them. They will go early and they will go all night, but they have little patience for a DJ working through a set list that clearly was not written for them.

That suits how I work. No fixed running order, a read of the room, and the willingness to abandon a plan that is not landing.

The moorland venues

North and west of the town — Horwich, Egerton, Bromley Cross, up towards Rivington and Belmont — the setting improves and the logistics get harder. Steeper approaches, tighter parking, and a few venues where the electrical supply needs checking before anyone plans a marquee.

None of it is a problem with a fortnight’s notice. All of it is a problem on the day.
