Ashton is the centre of gravity for Tameside weddings, and it has a broader mix of venues than most towns its size.
A proper mix of rooms
Ashton punches above its weight for wedding venues, largely because it has several different kinds. There are conventional hotel function suites. There are social and sports clubs that do a very good, unfussy job for a hundred guests. There are waterside conversions down towards the canal basin. And there are rooms attached to the older civic buildings in the town centre.
Each wants a different setup, which is the main reason it helps to tell me the venue rather than just the town.
The conversions need the most thought
Anything converted from industrial or warehouse use around the canal has the same characteristics: brick, hard floors, high ceilings, no soft furnishing. Sound travels a long way and comes back late, so a system that is simply loud ends up muddy.
The other thing about waterside venues, and it sounds trivial until it isn’t: they get cold. Guests drift outside for photographs and air, and if the evening turns they stop coming back. Keeping the room warm and the floor busy is partly a music job and partly just knowing to close a door.
The clubs are underrated
Some of the best nights I have done in Tameside have been in unglamorous rooms — cricket clubs, rugby clubs, social clubs — where the guest list knew each other, the bar was reasonable, and nobody was worried about the carpet. Those rooms need almost nothing technically and everything in terms of reading the crowd.
